Because of mounting incidents of burglaries and house break-ins in Canada, the importance of a secure locking system on front doors can never be understated. Along with the advancement in lock system technologies, burglars have also improved their mechanisms and tools to achieve their destructive intention. For avoiding UN-welcomed intrusion in the house, lock system manufacturers are introducing much personalized and highly advanced exterior door locking systems with additional benefits. Among the available advanced mechanisms, deadbolt locking system is rated as the most effective and trustworthy one, having improved technical attributes.
Multi-lock is a new locking appliance that features distinctive attributes. It is largely activated using a specific key or thumb turn, making the door more resilient to entry without using the appropriate key. It is not a spring-driven mechanism; rather it is applied to enhance the functions of spring-bolt lock system on exterior doors. The latest 3-deadbolt locking system is a highly advanced mechanism that gets activated automatically with the closing of doors.
Grades of Locking Mechanisms
A general myth about the locking mechanisms for front doors is that all the manufacturers introduce lock systems of similar standards and qualities. But as per the American National Standards Institute’s quality grade, the mechanisms are found with mainly three quality grades. These are:
ANSI Grade 1: Highest grade for commercial and residential locking mechanism,
ANSI Grade 2: Highest grade for only residential lock systems,
ANSI Grade 3: Lowest grade which indicates that a locking system meets just the minimum requirements.
Among these three categories of deadbolts, ANSI grade 1 locking system is highly suggested for exterior doors which have to withstand either manual or motorized forces exercised by intruders.
Apart from ANSI standards, there are UL standards that verify the technical efficiency of a locking mechanism. UL 437 is the most rated standard, ensuring high security and safety from unwelcomed intruders. UL 437 rated deadbolt systems are prominently resistant to different attacks such as prying, picking, drilling, and others.
We supply grade 2 and grade 1 locking systems. We offer our customers North American and European profile cylinders locks.
Euro profile cylinder lock
North American cylinder lock
The difference between North American and European style locks is in the shape of their cylinders and how they are mounted. Usually in a European lock the key pins face upward, while an American lock has key pins facing downward. Both Euro profile and American cylinders can have single, double and dummy options and are available with a laser cut key option. Key duplication is only allowed upon presenting a special card which comes with the initial lock purchase.
In standard cylinders we use Schelage or Weiser keyway. For high security we install multi-locks. You can always choose to upgrade your cylinder to a high security option making it a  Grade 1 product.
Selecting an apt deadbolt for exterior doors –
A better way to start selecting a robust and trustworthy door lock system is to think of the specifications and technical efficiency from the intruders’ perspective. Some bugrglars were interviewed in a survey and it was found that quality locking systems at front doors make them move to another house. They want to enter those houses having easy-to-unlock locking systems.
Required criteria for both deadbolt systems –
- The bolt should lengthen by minimum of 1 inch,
- They are required to be encased with hardened steel or other metals,
- They are required to be tapered and free rotating,
- The adjoining screw should not be visible from outside,
Is there Building Code required for door locks?
Several people think that the level of quality and security values for door locks are required to be in accordance with the local Building Codes. But the fact is that it is up to you to select a better locking mechanism for front doors of your house, based on your needs and budget. But in case of fire emergency, majority of building codes don’t endorse having double cylinder deadbolt locking system. It makes the residents waste more minutes in unlocking such systems. In the emergency situations, people are advised to leave a spare key in the house when someone is at home.
While thinking of providing complete security to home, the insulating value of the doors and doorframes is equally vital as having a secure locking system. It should be noted that the burglars try their strength on the doors which appear effortless to break into. In order to evade the possibility of unwanted intrusion in the house, you should go for the most reliable and enduring locking systems for the front doors.
Exterior entryways should have 3-deadbolt locking systems. It will give your door security and energy efficiency.
These days, all the promising lock manufacturers are coming forward with their high-end lock systems featuring resident-friendly applications.
